SUBLIME CITY Lucy reached up, pulling the Headset's Lipreader arm down to her mouth. The sensor's blue light flashing purple highlights across red gloss as her lips moved. "Why is it, that every time someone hires us to look into their dirty laundry, the first thing we find is a dead body?"
Sam put a cigarette in his mouth and talked around it as he walked across the loungeroom toward her.
"It wouldn't be a Murder/ Mystery if we didn't."
He stopped at the coffee table in the centre of the room. Picked up a small silver figurine of an Amazon warrior. He tried the arms, the sword, the base. Nothing. Noticed a barely discernible ridge on the breastplate. Pushed the left breast with his thumb. The helmet flicked up and a flame leapt from the Amazons skull. He lit the cigarette and put the lighter back where he found it.
Jackhammers shattered what was left of a cold August morning as Samuel and Lucy climbed out of Honey's blood red jaguar on the corner of Blank and Harlow in downtown Sublime.
Sam blew Honey a kiss as she hit the pedal and burned rubber.
"I think she's craving attention." Lucy signed as they walked towards the building.
Three Kill Clowns, loitering on the steps stood and blocked their way.
He ignored the menace. Said, "Nice codpiece." to the tall one with the ornate crotch and walked around the trio.
The codpiece stepped up to Lucy. "Do you know what we're waiting for?"
The other two faced Sam.
"You're looking the wrong way." He tried to warn them.
Lucy became a blur of graceful athletics, leg; groin, wrist; chin, elbow; cheek.
Sam smiled, "Show off." Her fingers ran through a number of expletives as she stepped over the colorful tangle of Clowns and followed her partner into the building. © Danny Johnson 2000 |

About SUBLIME CITY BLUES... Set in a future both bleak and brilliant, violent, comic, cerebral and sexual, SUBLIME CITY BLUES rocks. As the first of the novels nears completion, Johnson has finely tuned his hero Samuel Finch. Sam, the cynical, dry, hard-bitten detective with a good heart and a wicked sense of humour, is irresistible. So are his two gorgeous yet deadly female accomplices. SUBLIME CITY. A place where you watch your back. A place where you could reasonably expect to find Kill Clowns.... |

Further Developments It's not Phillip Marlow meets Lara Croft by way of A Clockwork Orange, because it's fresh and original... but as Johnson worked on SUBLIME CITY BLUES it became obvious that there was enormous potential for developing the concept in other areas. Areas such as, TV, film, animation, music and most significantly, As a songwriter and musician, he has been able to show us what the place sounds like. What music they listen to. As a graphic artist and painter, (see illustrations), he has been exploring the imagery, the colours , the look and the feel of this world. It's an idea that can conceivably be developed on a number of fronts simultaneously. Check back for further developments and release dates for the book. |
